Answer:

Moving trade goods along the ancient Silk Roads was made difficult by the fierce climatic and geographical conditions of desert and mountain regions along vast distances. Travelers would cross mountain ranges to deserts on foot which was not only a danger to them but the goods they were carrying as well. In many cases the goods they were carrying would either be destroyed or lost during the journey.
