Mr Douglas asked, "am I never to leave the valley of fear?" because it was pretty clear that danger was still awaiting him and his wife. Their were still predators out there. It was risky to live a peaceful life knowing the surrounding dangers and troubles.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Mr douglas is too tired running from the scowrers all his life. He always jumped in the fire and even faked his death to save his life. He said this because holmes told him that he might have to face even bigger danger. So in my opinion Douglas is tired of running away and said that he would never leave the danger will and will run away all the time. He want's peace and want's to be free from this cage of fear that he always was locked in.
