Why do americans blame president hoover for the creation of hoovervilles?

The Great Depression was one of the largest economic recessions in American history. The recession forced many people into poverty and homelessness. Many of these families then moved into homeless encampments. During the beginning of the Great Depression, Herbert Hoover was president.

Hoovervilles

Americans were angry with Hoover for how he handled the Great Depression. The people were expecting the government to offer economic relief; however, Hoover did little to help the impoverished. Hoover believed in self-reliance and was reluctant to offer any support to homeless people. Thus, people blamed Hoover for the conditions of homeless encampments, so they started to name them after him. The name "Hooverville" caught on and became popular.
