The trial of John Scopes in Tennessee in 1925. Scopes was trialled for breaking the law against teaching evolution, which he had been encouraged to do by the ACLU as a test case for freedom of speech

Immigration and Racism in the 1920s

Prohibition was not the only source of social tension during the 1920s. An anti-Communist “Red Scare” in 1919 and 1920 encouraged a widespread nativist and anti-immigrant hysteria.
