why do you have to use parentheses when there is more than one of the polyatomic ions when an ionic compound forms?

So then it will be easier for you to understand how many of the polyatomic ions you have in that compound.

For example, Ca(NO2)2: in here Ca has a charge of +2 and NO2 has -1, you need two of NO2 in order to make the compound have a charge of 0.
