Why did European countries sometimes choose to maintain spheres of influence instead of creating colonies?

European powers established spheres of influence in China rather than colonies as they had done in Africa and other parts of Asia because they were longtime trading partners and the U.S. feared other nations would divide China and shut out the U.S.
