The High Line was inspired by the 4.7 km (2.9 mi) long Promenade (tree-lined walkway), a similar project in Paris completed in 1993. The park is built on a viaduct of the New York Central Railroad's West Side Line.

Opened in 1934 as part of the West Side Improvement Project, the High Line was built as to safely transport goods to and from the largest industrial and manufacturing district in Manhattan, by way of an elevated rail system and such more. Hope it helps!
