Veterans Day originated as the anniversary celebration of the end of WWI (World War One). Its initial name was Armistice Day, but since the occurrence of WWII, citizens of Birmingham, Alabama have began to call it Veterans Day. This later became a wide commemoration for all veterans serving for their country.
