Many types of medicine aim to treat a disease or injury rather than prevent it. However, preventive medicine stops the disease before it starts. Infectious diseases are transmitted from person to person by the transmission of pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Non-communicable diseases are not transmitted by pathogens and are caused by several other indirect factors.
