A car with a diesel engine travels 663 miles using 13 gallons of fuel. Suppose that the relationship between the distance traveled and the amount of fuel used by this car is proportional.

a. Write an equation to represent this relationship.

Part a

Let the distance traveled in miles be
d and the amount of fuel used in gallons be
f.

The unit rate is
(663)/(13)=51, so the equation is
d=51f.

Part b

Substituting
f=8,
d=51(8)=408 miles.
