A ray of light in air (n=1.00) strikes a surface at an angle of 30.00° to the normal. The second substance is diamond (n=2.417). What is the angle of refraction?

We will use the Snell's Law

n_1\sin\theta_1=n_2\sin\theta_2

Where

n1=1

theta1=30°

n2=2.417

theta2=?

We susbtitute

1\sin(30)=2.417\sin\theta_2

We isolate theta 2

\theta_2=\sin^(-1)((\sin30)/(2.417))=11.94\text{\degree}

The angle of refraction is 11.94°
