Recall that the quadratic formula states that, the solutions to the quadratic equation

ax^2+bx+c=0

are

(-b\pm√((-b)^2-4ac))/(2a).

Now, in the given equation, a=-1 ,b=-6, and c= 8. Therefore, the solutions to the equation are:

x=(6\pm√(36+32))/(-2).

Simplifying the above result, we get:

x=-3\pm(-1)√(17).

Answer:

\begin{gathered} x_1=-3+√(17,) \\ x_2=-3-√(17). \end{gathered}
