Yes I think it is possible to restore the environment, even though it will not be exactly like it was origionally.

A few things that can be done:

1. To provide the left soil with relevant nutrients so that plants can grow

2. To plant trees and grasses, which will help in soil retention as well.

3. Clean the water flowing to the environment as it might have been contaminated during mining.
