Remember that

The average rate of change of the function f(x) is given by the formula

(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a)

where

a=2

b=5

f(a)=f(2)=2(2)^2-8(2)=-8

f(b)=f(5)=2(5)^2-8(5)=10

substitute

(10-(-8))/(5-2)=(18)/(3)=6

The average rate of change is 6
