The ratio number of pictures to hours is given by

\text{ratio}=(1)/(8)\frac{\text{ pictures}}{\text{hours}}

then, we can write

y=(1)/(8)t

where t is the time in hours and y is the number of pictures. Now, we know he painted y=6 pictures. then, by substituting this values into our equation, we have

6=(1)/(8)t

By multiplying both sides by 8, we get

\begin{gathered} 6*8=t \\ \text{then} \\ t=48\text{ hours} \end{gathered}

Then, the answer is 48 hours.
