Let x be the unknown number. Then the quotient of a number and 6 is:

(x)/(6)

To this be substract 3:

(x)/(6)-3

Now, this is 1, then:

(x)/(6)-3=1

Now we solve the equation,

\begin{gathered} (x)/(6)-3=1 \\ (x)/(6)=1+3 \\ (x)/(6)=4 \\ x=4\cdot6 \\ x=24 \end{gathered}

Therefore, x=24.
