We call transitional fossil to a fossil that has characteristics of an ancestral and a derived group.

For example, the Archaeopteryx is a transitional fossil that shows characteristics of dinosaurs and birds.

This doesn't mean that dinosaurs became birds, but that birds and dinosaurs are closely related.

What transitional fossils prove is that there is a relationship between groups, so is scientifically correct to use this term.
