Recall that statistics are numerical values calculated over a set of data points, that are normal a smaller subset of a bigger dataset. The whole dataset is considered as the population, and the subset receives the name of the sample. This fact could be pictured as follows

One example could be the average height of males in the age range 10-15 (parameter), while a statistic woulde be the average of height of males in the age range 10-15 in the city of Washington D.C (sample).
