The polymerase chain reaction is a technique in which a DNA sequence is multiplied (amplified) using short complementary sequences called primers. These primers delimit the size of the sequence to be amplified and a polymerase enzyme amplifies the sequence by the addition of nucleotides.

unlike electrophoresis (which separates DNA sequences according to their size) and restriction enzymes (which cut DNA into smaller pieces), the polymerase chain reaction, also called PCR, is the only technique that can produce millions of copies of a DNA sequence.
