Start by writing the equation for the exterior angle theorem in which it states that the addition of the two opposite inner angles must be equal to the exterior angle on the missing angle

write the equation

(s-49)+(s+12)=(s+48)

simpify left side of the equation

\begin{gathered} 2s-49+12=s+48 \\ 2s-37=s+48 \end{gathered}

take all common factors on one side and get all constants to the other

\begin{gathered} 2s-s=48+37 \\ s=85 \end{gathered}

S must be equal to 85 in order to fulfill the exterior angle theorem.
