The area of a rectangle is the product of length and breadth of the rectangle.

Hence, the area of rectangle ABCD is,

The area of rectangle ECGF is,


\begin{gathered} \text{Area}_(ECGF)=EF* FG \\ =4*7 \\ =28cm^2 \end{gathered}

Hence, the total area of the figure is,


\begin{gathered} \text{Area}=Area_{\text{ABCD}}+Area_(ECGF) \\ =12+28 \\ =40cm^2 \end{gathered}

Therefore, the area of the figure is 40 cm^2.
