Equation of A Line

There are several forms to express the equation of a line:

* Slope-intercept form:

y = mx + b

* Point-slope form:

y = m ( x - h) + k

* Standard form:

Ax + By = C

Where m is the slope of the line, b is the y-intercept, and (h, k) are the coordinates of one point of the line.

When the slope and the point are given, we use the point-slope form.

9

Point: (5, -9)

Slope: -2/5

Applying the equation:

\begin{gathered} y=-(2)/(5)(x-5)-9 \\ \text{Operate:} \\ y=-(2)/(5)x+2-9 \\ \boxed{y=-(2)/(5)x-7} \end{gathered}

The answer is given in the slope-intercept form
