The word transition refers to change. What would be a reasonable explanation for referring to the d-block elements as transition elements?

The elements present in the d-block part of the periodic table are exactly in the middle of s-block elements and p-block elements, and these two blocks of elements are very different, s-block elements are highly reactive, metallic and ionic, in the other hand, p-block elements are covalent in nature, and d-blocks have elements that are in the middle of these two extreme blocks of atoms, thus the name "transition elements"
