From the problem, we have :

3(1+p)=-5(p+1)

Distribute or multiply the number outside the parenthesis.

\begin{gathered} 3+3p=-5p-5 \\ \text{add 5p to both sides of the equation :} \\ 3+3p+5p=\cancel{-5p}-5+\cancel{5p} \\ 8p+3=-5 \\ \text{Subtract 3 from both sides of the equation :} \\ 8p+\cancel{3}-\cancel{3}=-5-3 \\ 8p=-8 \\ \text{Divide both sides by 8 :} \\ p=(-8)/(8) \\ p=-1 \end{gathered}

ANSWER :

The value of p is -1
