We use ANOVA tests are used to test groups, which correspond to one or more independent variables, to see if there is significant difference between them in respect to a certain result variable.

For example, we can test the performance in the same exam of the students of different colleges to see if one college outperforms the other.

In this case, the college is the independent variable, as we group students according to the college they attend to.
