Using Chip Models

The chip model uses red colour to represent positive integers and black to represent negative integers.

The numbers that are being added together are called addends.

Chips are placed on the board to represent each addend. Red for positive, black for negative.

• If the addends both carry positive signs then all the chips on the board are counted.

(example: 5 + 3)

• If the addends carry different signs (example: 5 - 3), then the bigger addend is remaining on the board after operation.
