We want to compare two numbers. 5/10 and 5/8.

To compare those numbers, first, let's simplify them. If we multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same number, the fraction stays the same.

If we divide both numerator and denominator of the first fraction by 5, we're going to get the following result

(5)/(10)=(5/5)/(10/5)=(1)/(2)

We can also use the following property

(a+b)/(c)=(a)/(c)+(b)/(c)

To rewrite our second fraction as two fractions.

(5)/(8)=(4)/(8)+(1)/(8)

Dividing both numerator and denominator of the first term by 4, we have

(5)/(8)=(4)/(8)+(1)/(8)=(1)/(2)+(1)/(8)

As you can see, 5/8 is equal to 5/10 plus a positive number, therefore, 5/8 must be greater than 5/10.
