If Sam's age is S then his brother's age will be 2S + 2

Giveb that the sum of their ages is 17 then

S + 2S + 2 = 17

3S + 2 = 17

subtract two from both sides

3S = 17 - 2

3S = 15

Divide both sides by 3

S = 15/3

= 5

Sam's brother's age

= 2(5) + 2

= 12

Hence Sam is 5 and his brother is 12
