In decribing the graph, the hiker starts at a higher altitude at time zero(point i) and moves to a point of lower altitude (point ii) as show in this sketch below.

At point ii to iii the hicker reduces to a lower atitude as shown by the decrease in slope from point ii to iii. The hiker is decelerating as speed decreases.
