LEt's solve the equation:


\begin{gathered} -14=-4u+2(u-4) \\ -14=-4u+2u-8 \\ -14+8=-2u \\ -6=-2u \\ u=(-6)/(-2) \\ u=3 \end{gathered}

Therefore u=3.
