We want to find the sum:

(2xy^2+15x-6)+(3xy^2-y+5)

We remember that when we add two polynomials, we find the terms with the same variables (those terms are called similar), and thus we add the coefficients (the numbers at the side of those variables).

In this exercise, the terms:

\begin{gathered} 2xy^2\text{ and }3xy^2\text{ are similar} \\ -6\text{ and }5\text{ are similar} \end{gathered}

Thus, when we add we obtain:

\begin{gathered} (2xy^2+3xy^2)+15x-y+(-6+5) \\ =5xy^2+15x-y+(-1) \\ =5xy^2+15x-y-1 \end{gathered}
