Xylem refers to the vascular tissue that moves water and other nutrients from the root of a plant where it is absorbed to the rest of it.

The xylem transfers water by utilizing transpiration. Transpiration is when water evaporates from a plant. It uses the tension created when water is pulled from the veins of the plant to refill them with the water recently absorbed by the roots.
