A compound is a substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion. For example, water is a compound because two hydrogens and one oxygen atom are combined chemically (H2O); another example is carbon dioxide, which is another compound where one carbon atom and two oxygens are chemically combined (CO2).
