Chris is hosting a yard sale to get rid of all his unwanted belongings. He currently has 180 personal items that he

wants to get money for. Each hour he is able to sell one third of the items.

Write the equation to represent the amount of items he still has. (Hint: if he gets rid of 1/3, what amount is left
over?)

If he sells 1/3 of the items, he keeps 1- 1/3 = 2/3

We can write the equation in the form

y = a b^x where a is the initial amount b is the rate at which it grows or decays and x is the time

a = 180

b = 2/3

y = 180 (2/3) ^x
