The electron transport chain uses free oxygen as a final electron acceptor of electrons from glucose metabolism. Four multiprotein complexes in the inner mitochondrial membrane composes the chain, and two small electron carriers are shuttling electrons between them. The electrons gradually lose energy. NADH and FADH2 complete the chain donating high-energy electrons, and oxygen molecules are reduced by low-energy electrons, forming water. The end products are water and ATP.
