9(2)/(10)miles

1) Considering that the first runner ran 4 3/10 miles and the second one did 4 9/10 we can add them up. But let's firstly turn them from mixed numbers to improper fractions.

2) Let's keep the bottom number, and multiply it by the whole number, and then add it to the numerator:

\begin{gathered} 4(3)/(10)=(10*4+3)/(10)=(43)/(10) \\ 4(9)/(10)=(10*4+9)/(10)=(49)/(10) \end{gathered}

So now we can add normally:

(43)/(10)+(49)/(10)=(92)/(10)=(46)/(5)

2.3) We can rewrite it as a Mixed Number, since 46 divided by 5 is 9.2 so we can write this way:

9(2)/(10)

So they ran 9 2/10 miles in total.
