Explain what a Favela is, and the reason for why they exist.

What is Favela?

Favela is the name given to popular and high-density housing projects that are part of cities. They are formed by the poorest part of the population, and are made up of houses built informally on often irregular and high-risk land in areas further away from the center, where access to services and urban infrastructure is precarious. The slum process is the result of socio-spatial inequalities in cities, and mainly stems from the disorderly urbanization characteristic of less developed countries.

Why do they exist?

They arise, then, from the misery and low living conditions of the population that, not being able to buy or rent in other regions of the cities, ends up “invading” other spaces and building improvised houses, often not even completed.
