Three times the sum of a number and four is eight less than one-half the number. What is the equation for this statement?

Gathering the data

Writing that wording as an equation we'd have:

3 (x+4) = 8-1/2(x)

Since x is a number. We want 3 times that number plus 4 units.

On the right side, we have half of it minus 8 units.
