The readers and ability to trust. The narrator, increases suspense in the story, because you can’t ever tell if the narrator is telling the truth. When the reader begins to second-guess the narrator, it adds a second layer of mystery and suspense, because the mistrust of the narrator becomes real to the reader, not just words on the page.
