What is slope-intercept form?

Slope-intercept is an equation of a line [y= mx + b] where m is the slope and b is the y intercept. Both of these pieces of information can be found looking at the graph you were given:

To find the y intercept, find the point when the line crosses over the y axis. For this line, it cross the y axis at point (0, -2) or y= -2

To find the slope, you must use the slope formula:

y₂ - y₁ / x₂ - x₁

*(x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) are two different coordinates.*

  • You have been given the coordinates (-3, 1) and (-4, 2)

PLUG THESE POINTS INTO THE SLOPE FORMULA:


(2-1)/(-4 -(-3)) =
(1)/(-4 + 3) =
(1)/(-1) = -1 = m

Now that you have m and b (the slope and y intercept) you can write your final equation in slope-intercept form:

y = -x - 2
