The relation between sides of right triangle is,

a^2+b^2=c^2

Substitute 5 for a, and 13 for c in the equation to obtain the value of b.

\begin{gathered} (5)^2+b^2=(13)^2 \\ b^2=169-25 \\ b=\sqrt[]{144} \\ =12 \end{gathered}

Thus length of unknown leg of right triangle is 12.
