\Delta=(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a)

So let's pick two points and plug them into this formula, examining the given graph of that function:

Chosen Points: (2,6) and ( 0,-1)


\begin{gathered} \Delta=(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a) \\ \Delta=(f(2)-f(0))/(2-(-1))=(6-(-1))/(2-(-1))=(7)/(3) \end{gathered}

Hence, the average rate of this function is 7/3
