Kudzu was introduced to the US from Japan in 1876 at the Centennial Exposition, in Philadelphia, and then in 1883 at the New Orleans Exposition.

Originally it was considered an ornamental plant, and then as food for livestock and a way to prevent soil erosion, with government funding for the latter.
