In this type of reactions, reactants must be ionic because of what happens during the reaction. The reactants are break down to form ions that will be rearranged. So for example, the anion of one of the reactants will be bonded with the cation of the other reactant and viceversa. That is why it is needed that both reactants have the capability to form ions. They must be dissolved in water because water produces this ion formation.
