Explanation:

area of a triangle:

½ x b x h

= ½ x 6 x 4

= 3 x 4

= 12.

since there are 8 of the same triangles, they will all have the same area. so to work out the total area of a triangles, we times the area of one triangle by the 8 triangles in the polygon.

12 x 8 = 96.

for the square in the middle:

area of a square = length x width

area of a square = 12 x 12 = 144.

all we need to do is add these two totals together.

144 + 96 =240cm².

we use the units cm², because we have been multiplying xcm x ycm which can be simplified to cm² :)
