we have the quadratic equation

u^2-u-12=0

we have that

a=1

b=-1

c=-12

Applying the formula to solve a quadratic equation

u=(-(-1)\pm√(-1^2-4(1)(-12)))/(2(1))
u=(1\pm7)/(2)

The values of u are

u=4 and u=-3

therefore

The answer is

u=-3,4
