Global warming is predicted to produce an increase in extreme temperatures and it is caused mainly by an increase in CO2 levels. The increasing temperatures are likely to cause a modification in air circulation patterns and increase evaporation, among others. These have consequences over climate and produce an increment over frequency and magnitude of extreme climatological events (like hurricanes). Also, global warming leaves no place for adaptation (as it is fast compared to biological adaptation), so many species are likely to go extinct, with important ecological effects. I consider these to be catastrophic effects.
