A sister chromatid is a half of a duplicated chromosome.

In other words:
Chromosomes line up at the metaphase plate, under tension from the spindle. The two sister chromatids of each chromosome are captured by microtubules from opposite spindle poles. Later on they are pulled away from each other, which causes them to be in half yet identical to one another.
