The slave trade had devastating effects in Africa. Economic incentives for warlords and tribes to engage in the slave trade promoted an atmosphere of lawlessness and violence. Depopulation and a continuing fear of captivity made economic and agricultural development almost impossible throughout much of western Africa. There were many consequences of slavery that have left lasting effects on people, and societies. Societies that sold slaves were impacted by the decisions to sell them, such as the Kingdom of Kongo, how their society was weakened by the greed, and need to keep up with the demand of slave trading.
