It is clear that Constant was initially supportive of Napoleon and his regime, as he was a member of the Tribunat during the early years of the French Empire. However, by the time of Napoleon's downfall, Constant had become a critic of the Emperor, and he was exiled from France during the Bourbon Restoration.
